Turf Installation and Grow-In
Warm season turf can be installed either in or out of season. There are several points of consideration and keys to establishing new turf. In the growing season, proper watering is key and most critical in establishing new turf. The amount of required water needed for proper grow-in is determined by heat and evaporation. Water all new turf initially upon installation to saturate turf and 3-4 inches of soil or seed bed. Thereafter, water effectively to maintain consistent moisture in the top soil levels. Remember, higher temperatures equal greater plant usage and evaporation and quickly lead to drought stress and decline. Discoloration and wilt are visual signs that drought stress is present, decline is in progress and immediate attention is needed. The first 21 days of grow-in are most critical and require timely watering to minimize drought stress and shock. Monitor new turf closely until fully established.
During the initial grow-in weed germination is highly probable. Freshly prepared soil and extensive watering will enhance weed germination. Remember, the initial focus is establishing the turf based on grow-in condition. Once new turf is established then focuses on pest control through pre and post applications, fertilization, and general maintenance should ensue.
When turf is installed late season or dormant there are additional issues to understand. Newly installed warm season turf has a higher risk of winter injury than established turf when installed during this period. Winter injury is generally promoted by extreme prolonged cold periods where exposure sometime causes severe turf decline (aka winter kill). Monitor and maintain moisture in turf and soil to minimize risk. Minimize nitrogen fertilization during the late growing season and dormant period. We recommend you research this topic for a clear understanding of the risk of winter injury and recommendations for limiting exposure. Capital City Turf does not guarantee against winter damage. |
